NFL set for its elite eight!

NFL Divisional Playoffs this weekend!

Tom Brady is looking to lead the Patriots a step closer to Super Bowl glory!

The race to Super Bowl XLIX continues to pick up momentum as we head into the Divisional Playoff round of games this weekend. The top four teams from the regular season are back after their weekend off and are the bookies’ picks to continue their quest towards the biggest single game in US sport on February 1st.

Wild Card weekend saw the Carolina Panthers take down the ailing Arizona Cardinals to be “rewarded” with a trip to face defending Super Bowl champions Seattle. The Seahawks, who started the season looking anything other than potential “repeaters”, are now the team of the moment in the league. They are almost unbeatable in front of their own boisterous crowd at CenturyLink Field and even the most loyal of Carolina fans will admit to them having little chance of causing an upset.

The same cannot be said of the other three weekend matchups. Whilst the Packers, Patriots and Broncos all start their home games as warm favourites, the Cowboys, Ravens and Colts have the qualities to get the job done on the road. Baltimore, especially, looked good when defeating AFC North rivals Pittsburgh in their Wild Card encounter last week and Men In Purple have won two of three postseason encounters at Foxboro since 2000.

Many neutral fans would love to see yet another instalment of the Tom Brady/Peyton Manning rivalry in the AFC Championship Game, but there is still plenty of work to be done by both the Pats and the Broncos before this showdown can become reality.

NFL Divisional Playoffs Odds

Baltimore Ravens 3.45 New England Patriots 1.34

Carolina Panthers 4.90 Seattle Seahawks 1.19

Dallas Cowboys 3.20 Green Bay Packers 1.38

Indianapolis Colts 3.45 Denver Broncos 1.34

Crisis time for Klopp!

Crisis in Dortmund!

Klopp’s Dortmund are rock-bottom of the Bundesliga!

He may be one of the most sought-after managers in Europe after his recent success, but for the time being Jurgen Klopp is living a Bundesliga nightmare at Borussia Dortmund. Whilst big rivals Bayern Munich are seemingly strolling to yet another title, Dortmund amazingly find themselves rock-bottom of the division after 13 games.

Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Eintracht Frankfurt was just the latest in a run of inept performances in the league this season, made all the more mystifying by Dortmund’s excellent form in the Champions League. The Black and Yellows have now lost eight of their 13 league games and won just three. To make matters worse the atmosphere within the club seems to have turned nasty following the latest flop.

Dortmund’s huge army of supporters have always enjoyed a reputation for patience, but travelling fans vented their frustration and anger in no uncertain terms after the Frankfurt game to further increase the pressure on both Klopp and his team to turn things around.

General manager Michael Zorc stressed that the club’s bosses are still behind charismatic Klopp, but his magic does indeed seem to be on the wane. The coach himself stressed that he has no intention of throwing in the towel after six years at the helm at Signal Iduna Park, but Friday’s Bundesliga encounter at home to a confident Hoffenheim side could yet prove to be a crossroads in his career. If the 2011 and 2012 Bundesliga champions should slip up again at home (fourth loss in seven home games), then a fairytale relationship between coach, team and fans could well come to an abrupt end.

German Bundesliga, Matchday 14: Borussia Dortmund vs. TSG Hoffenheim Betting Odds:

Borussia Dortmund 1,53
Draw 4.25
TSG Hoffenheim 5.25

Next Bundesliga coach to leave his club Odds:

Jurgen Klopp 7.0

Can Philly fathom Rodgers?

Eagles vs. Packers should be a classic on Sunday

Aaron Rodgers is looking for another huge performance against the Eagles on Sunday!

It’s all eyes on Lambeau Field in Green Bay this Sunday when the Eagles travel to the Packers in what promises to be one of the top games of the NFL regular season’s Week 11 action.

Philadelphia looked good storming past the Carolina Panthers last Monday, whilst the Pack annihilated their bitter rivals from Chicago in a laughably one-sided affair. Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has been in MVP form for most of the fall so far, threw for an amazing six first-half touchdowns – becoming only the second player in NFL history to achieve the feat.

Whilst we can’t reasonably expect more of the same this time around, Rodgers could be in for another big game as the Eagles’ defense is hardly anything to write home about. Ranked 12th in the league in points allowed per game and only 21st in yards allowed per game, head coach Chip Kelly and his staff are going to have to find something special to keep Rodgers on the leash.

On the other side of the ball, however, the Eagles are a different story altogether. At 404.3 yards per game so far they are right up their amongst the best and the good news is that regular quarterback Nick Foles’ injury doesn’t seem to have affected them. Stand-in Mark Sanchez, making his first NFL start in almost two years, did everything right against the Panthers with 332 yards and two TDs in the 45-21 win. He may have been found not good enough by the New York Jets, who are now one of the worst team in the NFL, but confidence still seems to be high and Sanchez will be relishing the challenge of resurrecting what looked like a floundering career.

The Packers have lost just three of their last 35 regular season games at Lambeau Field with Rodgers at the helm and they should prevail this time around, but their Cheesehead fans shouldn’t expect them to have an easy ride in what could yet prove to be a dress-rehearsal for the NFC Championship Game in January!

NFL Week 11: Philadelphia Eagles @ Green Bay Packers Betting Odds:

Philadelphia Eagles 3.1
Green Bay Packers 1.4

To win the NFC Championship Odds:

Green Bay Packers 4.0
Seattle Seahawks 4.0
Philadelphia Eagles 7.0
Arizona Cardinals 7.5

Can Brees banish the road blues at last?

The Saints face a crucial game against the Panthers.

Drew Brees and the Saints need to get winning on the road!

One thing is pretty much certain in the NFL – if you can’t win on the road, then you have little chance of making the Super Bowl!

After starting the season as one of the favorites to challenge in the NFC title race, the New Orleans Saints now have to change their priorities in order to keep their season alive. Drew Brees and Co. are almost unbeatable at their own Superdome, but currently just cannon-fodder on the road. Eight straight regular season away defeats since last November are a sorry tale indeed and everyone at the franchise knows that this needs to be changed quickly.

Just four days after showing what potential they have by thrashing highly-fancied Green Bay in Week 8, the Saints travel to NFC South rival Carolina on Thursday desperate to make a statement away from their own fans at last. Luckily the division is the worst in the NFL at the moment with no team able to boast a positive record so far.

After starting the season with two wins, the Panthers have managed just one victory in their last six games, but are still top of the division standings. Last week saw them put up strong resistance against defending Super Bowl champion Seattle before eventually going down 13-9.

Thursday’s game could have a crucial bearing on the NFC South title race because however bad the teams are throughout the season, the division champion lives to fight another day in the playoffs! The Saints will be highly motivated to beat their rivals, overtake them in the standings and prove that they can win on the road after all!

NFL Week 9: New Orleans Saints @ Carolina Panthers Betting Odds:

New Orleans Saints 1.71
Carolina Panthers 2.20

To win the NFC South Odds:

New Orleans Saints          1.5
Carolina Panthers            2.85
Atlanta Falcons                13.0
Tampa Bay Buccaneers  67.0

Browns back in business!

Browns could be an NFL force this year!

Will playoff football be back at FirstEnergy Stadium this season?

Being a major league sports fan in Cleveland hasn’t been a bundle of laughs in recent years with the Indians failing to make much of an impression in MLB, the Cavs being NBA also-rans and the Browns being pretty much a laughing stock in the NFL.

But wait a minute, things are certainly looking up as far as the latter two are concerned! LeBron James’ return to the Cavaliers was THE big sports story of the summer in the USA, and with the additional acquisition of Kevin Love Cleveland Cleveland is now the bookies preseason pick to take the NBA title this year.

And what about the Browns? After years of playing fourth fiddle in the AFC North, things are suddenly looking up in a big way at FirstEnergy Stadium. Sunday’s impressive 31-10 thumping of the Steelers has taken coach Mike Pettine’s team to 3-2 for the season – not much to get excited about you might think, but with games against the Jaguars (0-6), the Raiders (0-5) and the Buccaneers (1-5) coming up next, things could soon look very different indeed!

The Browns last made the postseason in 2007 and have failed to post more than five regular season wins in the six seasons since. Pettine has chosen a conservative approach in offense with quarterback Brian Hoyer, a Cleveland native by the way, executing his role without any major mistakes so far – and don’t forget there is still college football wonder-boy Johnny Manziel to fall back on should Hoyer get injured! An average of 26.8 points per game is not bad by anyone’s standards and that number should continue to rise if the Browns can keep their momentum going before entertaining the Bengals in what should be a true test of their potential on November 6th!

NFL Week 7: Cleveland Browns @ Jacksonville Jaguars Betting Odds:

Cleveland Browns 1.42
Jacksonville Jaguars 3.0

To win the AFC North Odds:

Cincinnati Bengals    2.2
Baltimore Ravens     2.75
Cleveland Browns    6.5
Pittsburgh Steelers  7.0

Cardinals dreaming of Super Bowl at home!

Cardinals dreaming of the Super Bowl!

The Cardinals could be playing in the Super Bowl in front of their home fans.

After picking up three wins in their first three games this season, the Arizona Cardinals have without a doubt been one of the major surprises in the young NFL season and with February’s Super Bowl showdown taking place in their own University of Phoenix Stadium motivation is extra high to keep the run going.

Week 3 saw coach Bruce Arian’s team underline their intent by beating one of the nation’s top teams, NFC West rival San Francisco – and that with their second-string quarterback at the helm. Arizona’s original starter Carson Palmer has missed the last two games with a shoulder injury, but stand-in Drew Stanton has looked the part, playing conservative yet mistake-free football to pick up two wins.

The Cardinals enjoyed a week off in Week 4 and return this Sunday to face a true test of their Super Bowl credentials – a trip to last season’s AFC champion Denver. The Broncos with superstar Peyton Manning leading the way suffered an OT defeat in their Super Bowl rematch with the Seattle Seahawks last time out, but started the season with wins over both the Colts and the Chiefs and are a test for anyone in their own Mile High Stadium.

Arizona started the 2012 season at 4-0 before going on to amazingly lose their next nine(!) games, but this year’s vintage looks as though it has the quality to avoid another such disastrous collapse. Everyone at the franchise is insisting on taking the season one game at a time, but there can be little doubt that the thought of a Super Bowl appearance at home is lingering in their minds!

NFL Week 5: Arizona Cardinals @ Denver Broncos Betting Odds

Arizona Cardinals 3.9
Denver Broncos 1.28

To win the Super Bowl Betting Odds:

Seattle Seahawks    4.5
Denver Broncos      5.5
Cincinnati Bengals  11.0
Arizona Cardinals   21.0

Battle royal at Soldier Field!

Packers vs. Bears on Sunday!

A fierce NFL rivalry continues when the Packers face the Bears!

It’s time for one of the oldest and fiercest rivalries in the NFL to take centre stage again this weekend when the Green Bay Packers travel to the Chicago Bears for a matchup that could have serious consequences as far as the rest of the season in the NFC North is concerned.

Aaron Rodgers and the Pack, perennial favourites to take the division, are currently bottom of the standings after losing two of their first three games this season. Ok, ok, they can be forgiven for not coming away from Seattle with a win on the opening day of the season, but a shaky come-from-behind win at home to the Jets and another loss on the road at the Detroit Lions are hardly the best preparation for a trip to Soldier Field.

After slipping up at home to the Bills in Week 1, the Bears have put together back-to-back prime-time road victories at the 49ers and the Jets to make a real statement of intent for the upcoming season. Quarterback Jay Cutler, whose ability and character under pressure have been questioned in the past, is looking good and his stats even overshadow those of Rodgers as we head towards their showdown. Many experts are expecting both playmakers to shine in this high-profile duel and so a high-scoring game could well be on the cards.

The Bears lead the all-time stats between the two teams by 93 wins to 89 (6 ties), but it’s the Packers who have taken nine of their last 11 meetings and everyone in green and yellow will be doing their utmost to further improve that record this time around and get the franchsie back on track.

NFL Week 4: Green Bay Packers @ Chicago Bears Betting Odds

Green Bay Packers 1.8
Chicago Bears 2.05

To win the NFC North Betting Odds:

Green Bay Packers    2.35
Detroit Lions             2.6
Chicago Bears           3.5
Minnesota Vikings   34.0

Falcons flying high!

Can the Falcons beat the Bengals?

Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons started the NFL season with a big win!

There were quite a few experts predicting a difficult season for the Atlanta Falcons after several changes to their roster on both sides of the ball this summer. Indeed, after falling behind by 13 points to NFC South rival New Orleans in the first half of Week 1, things seemed to be going pretty much as expected, before quarterback Matt Ryan and his offense finally got into their stride.

Ryan threw a franchise-record 448 yards as the hosts stormed back to finally secure a 37-34 OT victory off the boot of kicker Matt Bryant in what could yet prove a crucial win in the race to the division crown.

The next goal for the Falcons to achieve is to win a second straight game – something they failed to do in their miserable season last year – but it will be anything other than easy as Week 2 takes then north to Cincinnati where the Bengals are defending a nine-game Regular Season home winning streak.

The Men in Stripes got off to a good start to the season themselves, grinding out a narrow victory at Baltimore in Week 1, and hopes are high in Cincy that this could be the season in which the team finally makes a serious Super Bowl challenge.

After recent playoff failure, the heat is on quarterback Andy Dalton to deliver the goods in the postseason at last following the signing of a massive new contract earlier this year, but everyone at the franchise knows it is now a question of keeping concentration high and securing a good start to what could, and indeed should, be a long season ahead.

A home defeat to the Falcons would be a serious confidence blow to all at Paul Brown Stadium, and after Atlanta’s positive Week 1 showing nobody will be taking the visitors lightly on Sunday!

NFL Week 2: Atlanta Falcons @ Cincinnati Bengals Betting Odds:

Atlanta Falcons        3.05
Cincinnati Bengals  1.41

Brady Bunch need to bounce back!

Can the Pats bounce back against the Vikings?

Tom Brady and the Patriots are feeling the heat after their Week 1 loss!

Superstar NFL quarterback Tom Brady has experienced many things in his amazing career so far, but being alone in last place in the AFC East division is something completely new to him. The Patriots 33-20 loss to division rivals Miami on Sunday, coupled with the Buffalo’s upset win at Chicago and the NY Jets victory against Oakland means New England is propping up the standings on its own for the first time since Brady became the franchise’s starter in 2001.

Ok, ok, it’s only Week 1 of a 17-week season and there is still little doubt that the Pats will bounce back in style, but it will be interesting to see how a team that is used to dominating a division with such ease will react to what was a poor performance indeed.

New England’s defense found no answer to marauding Dolphins’ running back Knowshon Moreno, who rushed for 134 yards and a crucial fourth-quarter TD that sealed the deal for the home team. Miami outscored coach Bill Belichik’s team 23-0 in the second half to rack up their highest score against their nemesis since 1994.

Brady just couldn’t get his offense into gear in the blistering heat in Florida and finished with stats of just 29 completions from 56 passes for 249 yards.

Next up for the Patriots is a trip Minnesota where they face a Vikings team that was a positive surprise in Week 1. Led by WR Cordarrelle Patterson, who ran for 102 yards on just three carries, with a 67-yard scoring run, the Vikes swamped the St. Louis Rams on the road to run away to a 34-6 victory. Buoyed by this great start to the season, they will certainly provide the Brady Bunch with the sternest of tests in front of their own fans on Sunday – could the visitors slip up again?

New England Patriots @ Minnesota Vikings, Betting Odds:

New England Patriots     1.63
Minnesota Vikings          2.40

To Win The Super Bowl, Betting Odds (Selection):

Seattle Seahawks            4.5
Denver Broncos              5.0
New England Patriots   12.0
Cincinnati Bengals         21.0
Indianapolis Colts          31.0
Minnesota Vikings         67.0

Van Gaal ready for a devil of a job!

vanGaal

Can van Gaal get Manchester United back on track?

After coming up just short at the 2014 World Cup with the Dutch national team, ex Oranje-coach Louis van Gaal has wasted no time in throwing all his energy into his next big task – getting Manchester United back on the road to success.

After suffering their worst season for 24 years under Ferguson-successor David Moyes last year, United are looking to the experienced Dutchman to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford. Van Gaal has vowed to leave no stone unturned as he attempts to banish the ghosts of 2013/14 and his reign has got off the perfect start with his squad winning the prestigious International Champions Cup in the USA.

Ok, everyone knows that this was just a summer tournament with as much emphasis on marketing opportunities as football itself, but straight victories over Roma, Inter Milan, Champions League winner Real Madrid and, of course, bitter rivals Liverpool in the final will certainly have given every player at the club a real boost as the start of the Premiership season looms large.

Van Gaal is a man confident in his own footballing beliefs and is not afraid to rub stars up the wrong way if he feels they are not 100% behind the cause. It will be interesting to see if the current harmony continues to prevail around Manchester when the season gets underway, but with no European football to distract them this year, the Red Devils look certain to once again play a major role in the destiny of the EPL title!

Who will win the Premier League title?

Chelsea                              2.85
Manchester City              3.0
Manchester Utd              5.5
Arsenal                              7.0
Liverpool                          11.0
Tottenham                       67.0
